What helps Moldovan producers to sell the first strawberries at very high prices?

The entry of strawberries into the market coincided with the pre-Easter week, when households buy food for the festive table, regardless of the cost

This week, the first local strawberry garden (strawberry) grown in greenhouses appeared on sale in the Moldavian market. There are still very few offers, lots are also very small. The price in the temporary “crisis” markets of Chisinau is 120 lei / kg ($ 6.66 / kg). In social networks and on improvised online sites, individual producers of greenhouse strawberries offer their goods 5-7 lei / kg more. Moreover, this is the price of “microscopic” wholesale – sellers are ready to deliver orders to consumers with a size of at least 5 kg. That is, one “consumer check” should be at least 625 lei (about $ 35).

The association of berry producers “Pomu ягодoarele Moldovei” assesses the level of demands of producers in the current situation as “not that it is overpriced, rather unbalanced” and attribute this to the coincidence of several significant factors. The first – the entry of domestic strawberries into the market coincided with the pre-Easter week, when households purchase food for the festive table, regardless of the costs and other difficulties. Even for the sake of access to the shelves of supermarkets that do not indulge consumers with assortment variety, queues are already lining up.

The second reason for the “growth prices” in the association is qualified as “a lack of marketing knowledge and experience with small producers of berries.” Previously, intermediary dealers sensitively monitored the slightest movements in the wholesale and retail markets of cities, flexibly and adequately regulated the level of purchase prices for berries daily. In a situation where the farmer is forced to “sell to himself,” and even on the Internet, with home delivery to the customer, it is difficult for him to resist the temptation to “recapture all the costs and risks of a whole working day” in one trip.

The association “Pomușoarele Moldovei” hopes that the price of strawberries will more or less balance as the pre-holiday excitement declines. And when stationary urban markets, well-known to all, are opened, the pricing situation will generally approach normality.
