Uzbekistan prices collapse due to export halt recorded today

At the moment, bulk lots of onions in Uzbekistan can be bought for less than 10 US cents per kg

According to EastFruit analysts, today in Uzbekistan there was a sharp collapse in the wholesale and retail prices of onions. According to preliminary estimates, in just a couple of days, prices for Uzbek onions fell by an average of 35-40%.

At the moment, bulk consignments of onions in Uzbekistan can be bought for less than 10 US cents per kg (less than 1 thousand Uzbek soms). In some cases, sellers are ready to sell onions even at 8.5 US cents per kg, but not at the highest quality and small caliber.

Thus, wholesale prices for onions in Uzbekistan have now become quite attractive for exporters, but this does not mean at all that onions will be exported. It was the inability to take out the onions, according to traders, that caused the price collapse. In particular, onion markets that are already on the border, but could not be crossed, are now offered for sale on the wholesale markets of Uzbekistan.

According to traders, border crossing has become much more complicated, as all countries fear the spread of the coronavirus, therefore they often return either cars or drivers.

Uzbekistan exports onions mainly to Russia, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Remains of onions are very high in Afghanistan, and Russia and Kazakhstan are very meticulous about goods and vehicles from Uzbekistan. Therefore, it is possible that in the near future, Uzbek onions will begin to be actively supplied to Tajikistan, where prices rose sharply last week. In Tajikistan, it is now possible to sell onions at least twice as expensive as in Uzbekistan.
