04/17/2020

Now, early cabbage in Ukraine is on average 12% more expensive than in the same period last year.

According to daily monitoring of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project, producers from Transcarpathia this week began to ship the first consignments of new cabbage to the market. Typically, the season starts already in early April, but this year too late spring leads to serious delays in the maturity of early cabbage. Today, cabbage from heated greenhouses is just beginning to enter the market, but the supply of these products remains quite small.

So, today the new crop cabbage is offered in small lots at a price of 20-27 UAH / kg ($ 0.74-0.99 / kg), while interest in purchases, according to farmers, remained restrained. It should be noted that now early cabbage in Ukraine is on average 12% more expensive than in the same period last year.

As for last year’s cabbage, a downward price trend continued on the Ukrainian market this week. Demand for products remained very restrained, while the supply on the market was quite voluminous. At the same time, many farmers were interested in selling the remaining volumes before the mass entry of early cabbage into the market, and therefore continued to make concessions to customers. So, by the end of the week, shipment of cabbage for the harvest of 2019 was carried out at 2-3.5 UAH / kg ($ 0.07-0.13 / kg), which is on average 22% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.

It is worth noting that the cost of last year’s cabbage in Ukraine at the moment is on average 1.8 times lower than in mid-April 2019.
