Over the past 5 years, the average growth rate of blueberries from Ukraine, even according to official statistics, was 26.5% per year

According to EastFruit analysts, Ukraine ranks second among the 20 largest blueberry exporters in the world in terms of the growth rate of blueberry exports.

“Ukraine is still far from the world leaders in terms of the volume and value of blueberry exports, such as Peru, Chile, Spain, the United States and Morocco, but it is actively increasing export volumes in value terms, which allowed this country to get into the top 20 in 2019” – says Andriy Yarmak, an economist at the investment department of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

“Over the past 5 years, the average growth rate of blueberries from Ukraine, even according to official statistics, was 26.5% per year. At the same time, real growth rates could have been higher, given certain supplies of blueberries under the forest blueberry export code. In terms of growth rates, Ukraine is second only to Peru, which increased exports at an incredible pace – by 38.9% per year! In the top 20, only Portugal had comparable indicators with Ukraine, which showed 25.3% of the average increase in exports for the year. Exports from Serbia (21.4% per year), South Africa (21.1% per year) and Romania (19% per year) are also growing relatively fast, ”says Andrei Yarmak.

During the international webinar “Blueberries in Eastern Europe”, dedicated to the unique research “The market for tall blueberries in Eastern Europe”, which allows you to get a complete picture of the prospects for the production, export and import of this berry in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, Mr. Yarmak noted in particular, that novices should never be ignored in this sector.

“Ten years ago, when Chile was already the leader in the world ranking of blueberry exporters and steadily increased its export shipments, Peru did not export blueberries at all. Five years ago, Peru exported 20 times less blueberries than Chile. And already last year, 2019, Peru exported 42% more blueberries than Chile! ”, – the FAO economist illustrates his statement with a vivid example.

As a reminder, the webinar was held on September 17, 2020 in English, and its recording is available at this link.
