Ukraine: full-fledged trade in fruits and vegetables has not yet recovered

Sales of frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables have already declined by an average of 60-70% compared to 2019

Most food markets in Ukraine have not resumed their work, even despite the permission of the Cabinet. So Ukrainian producers will continue to incur losses until the quarantine measures are completely lifted. Analysts of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPAA) continue to receive messages from domestic producers due to problems with the sale of fruits and vegetables, both last year and early. Given that the quarantine in Ukraine has been extended until May 22, the losses of farmers can reach such proportions that next year some of the producers simply will not be able to start the new season due to lack of funds.

According to market operators, sales of frozen and fresh fruits and vegetables have already declined by an average of 60-70% compared to 2019. Moreover, lower prices for early vegetables and berries also significantly affected farmers’ incomes. As of the end of April, fresh fruit and vegetable products fell by an average of 30-40% compared to last season.

“So, for example, a few weeks ago, the greenhouse cucumber was shipped at 12-15 UAH / kg, which is approximately equal to the cost level, and producers of garden strawberries sold berries at 50-80 UAH / kg – 40% cheaper than last year Only a decrease in the average air temperature in Ukraine provoked an increase in prices for vegetables and berries, because the selection of products in domestic greenhouses was significantly reduced, and further warming will contribute to an increase in the supply of greenhouse fruits and vegetables, which, in turn, will affect . Therefore, no loss of farmers in this season is hardly over, and this is not to mention those manufacturers who simply threw away their products in the trash, “- commented the director of development UPOA Katerina Zvereva.

What is the situation with retail markets? Today, markets work only in some areas. However, their work is significantly limited by strict sanitary standards. So, for example, in the markets operating in Kiev, Odessa, Chernihiv, Khmelnitsky, Lviv, the body temperature of visitors is checked at the entrance and the number of customers in the trade pavilion is monitored. All working markets should be equipped with antiseptics, and the distance between sellers is at least 3 meters.

Under such conditions, not all markets are capable of working, and the issue of public, regional and city transport remains open. A significant part of the service personnel, sellers and buyers are physically unable to enter the market.

“As for other regional centers, in Sumy, Kharkov, Poltava, Ternopol, Lutsk, Cherkassy, Kherson, food markets still do not work and it is unlikely that their work will be resumed until the quarantine is relaxed (May 11). In particular, in Sumy only the central city market plans to resume work, and 27 food markets should resume work throughout the region on May 12. Now farmers from the suburbs break the so-called “spontaneous markets” around the central market in Sumy and sell their products. to, similar events are prosecuted by police, “said the executive director of the UPOA Semyon Kramarenko.

A similar situation is observed in Kharkov and Cherkassy, however, according to local operators, law enforcement officials often turn a blind eye to spontaneous trade.

Therefore, it should be understood that not all manufacturers in such conditions are able to sell at least part of their products, therefore, it will be possible to talk about the full resumption of the markets only after the quarantine measures are completely lifted. Until then, most domestic producers will continue to increase their losses.
