Ural breeders have been working on obtaining a new variety of black currant “Vympel” for about 20 years

Scientists of the Sverdlovsk Horticultural Selection Station – a structural subdivision of the UrFANITS UB RAS – have registered a new variety of cherries and currants in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia, writes the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

The bred berry crops are distinguished by high winter hardiness, large-fruited, original dessert taste, and therefore the berries are recommended to be consumed fresh, but they are also perfect for processing.

The variety tests by the state commission lasted almost 10 years. The experts checked the plants for all the declared characteristics: ripening, yield, resistance to diseases, size and taste of the fruit, and many others. In addition, for industrial testing, new varieties were sent for cultivation and study to different soil and climatic zones, to cities such as Kirov, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Tyumen, Barnaul and others.

“It takes an average of 30 years to get a new variety of stone fruit crops. First, breeders collect and study the collection of available varieties, identify the most valuable traits, be it the taste of berries, ripening or something else, then hybridize, get seedlings, propagate them and plant them for collection study. Work on the Vita steppe cherry variety began in 1980, when scientists conducted pollination. A year later, we received seedlings, after 10 years the variety was brought to the elite, multiplied and planted for study, “said Margarita Isakova, senior researcher at the Sverdlovsk Horticultural Selection Station, author of the Vita steppe cherry variety.

The new variety of cherries “Vita” are distinguished by their short stature (excellent for growing in the steppe), early ripening in mid-July, which helps to avoid the common fungal disease of coccomycosis, large-fruited (the weight of one berry reaches 5 grams) and original sweet taste (usually steppe varieties of cherries have a sour taste).

A patent has already been obtained for the Vita cherry variety; today it can be purchased at the Sverdlovsk Horticultural Breeding Station, as well as in a number of large private nurseries in the country.

The Ural breeders have been working on obtaining a new variety of black currant “Vympel” for about 20 years. According to scientists, it turned out to be the most delicious of the available varieties. In addition, the currant tolerates the Ural winters well and is excellent for planting under mechanized harvesting, due to the erect form of the bushes.

“The resulting variety of currants is of average flowering and ripening period, resistant to powdery mildew and kidney mites, large-fruited, with delicate skin and pulp. Ideal for fresh consumption, as well as for all types of processing, “explained Elena Mikhailovna Chebotok, senior researcher at the Sverdlovsk Horticultural Selection Station, author of the Vympel black currant variety.
