The Georgian government is coordinating the process of export by local farmers of their agricultural products outside the quarantine zone and the import of food there

In order to avoid disruptions in the provision of food, including agricultural products, to the Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities, 6 large distribution centers have been created in the Kvemo Kartli region, which includes these municipalities, ”Georgian Minister of Environment and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili said.

After strict quarantine restrictions were introduced in Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities on March 23 under the state of emergency in Georgia, certain difficulties arose due to the threat of the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, both with the export of agricultural products by local farmers outside the quarantine zone and with the import of food there , including agricultural products.

This, in particular, was due to the fact that residents of municipalities (including entrepreneurs) are prohibited from leaving their territory without passing a two-week quarantine. To this was added the prohibition on moving around the country at night, provided for by the curfew imposed on March 31.

Some of the farmers of the region, which is one of the main suppliers of early vegetables and green grass in the country, have already settled the issue of supplying their products to the capital’s agricultural markets thanks to cooperation with Tbilisi partners. One of the permissible schemes is to load products onto vehicles sent from Tbilisi with a driver who does not leave the cab during the entire stay in the quarantine zone. Certain schemes also apply to the import of products into the quarantine zone, but deliveries have not yet been carried out in the same volume.

“In Kvemo Kartli, there are especially strict quarantine measures, which is a challenge in terms of uninterrupted supply. When a curfew exists in the country, difficulties arise for importers, distributors. We all need to understand that making such decisions is necessary. These are not the desired solutions, but necessary – so that we maximally prevent the spread of the disease. The food supply chain is very complex. These are not only food stores that all consumers see, they have a wide infrastructure behind them. Distribution, which worked at night, is to some extent limited, and it has to be rebuilt in accordance with the new reality. 6 large distribution centers have been created in Kvemo Kartli – so that in conditions of limited mobility in the Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities there will be no interruptions in food supply. This issue has already been resolved – coordination has been established between local distributors and large distributors operating nationwide. Today, the most important thing is compliance with health, quarantine requirements and actions taking into account these conditions, ”said Levan Davitashvili.

The Minister emphasized that “food supplies and supply for the population are vital in the face of any restrictions, including quarantine.”

A state of emergency was declared in Georgia on March 21 for a period of 1 month, until April 21. Supervision of the management of food stocks and food supply in Georgia was entrusted to the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
