The sweet corn market in Ukraine will grow, and investments in this business will pay off in six months – Myroslav Pariy

This is possible, provided that the technological process is well-functioning, there are no errors in the cultivation process, all cobs of commercial quality are obtained, favorable weather conditions and a sales market.

The global sweet corn market is projected to grow until 2030. Subject to the cultivation technology, obtaining high-quality marketable products and the presence of a stable sales market in Ukrainian conditions, it is possible to achieve profitability in this type of agribusiness at the level of 300-400%. At the same time, investments in a business can not only pay off, but also bring profit to the farmer in six months. This opinion was expressed by the breeder, geneticist, co-owner of the company “VNIS” (“All-Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Breeding”) Miroslav Pariy during the online webinar “Sweet corn – a profitable niche for Ukrainian agribusiness”, which took place August 13.

The event was organized by the Sapienza agromedia agency.

The breeding area of the VNIS company is represented by about 3 thousand types of corn

At the beginning of the online webinar, Miroslav Pariy noted that VNIS is currently engaged in the selection of many crops. The main ones are sunflower, rapeseed and wheat.

“However, in due time, I became interested in sweet corn and it became my hobby. In the last 4 years, this hobby has grown into a rather profitable business, which I am very happy about. Today our company is testing about 300 new hybrids. We provide seeds not only to Ukrainian, but also to foreign farms in Belarus and North America, and we are also negotiating the exchange of breeding material with Japan, ”said the co-owner of VNIS.

During an online webinar, Miroslav Pariy said that the information about sweet corn, which is available in open sources today, in particular on the Internet, is simply an adapted text from Soviet textbooks. That is why the breeder went into detail on the professional description of the main varieties of sweet corn that are on the market today.

“Historically, the first type of sweet corn was the Sugar type. It is a mutation in corn that results in incomplete starch synthesis. What’s the problem with this kind of corn? The fact is that the substances that accumulate in the grain during the day after harvesting begin to be synthesized into starch. Such corn has less sweetness, quickly loses its properties and should be consumed immediately after harvesting, ”the specialist noted.

Also, according to Miroslav Parij, a new mutation in corn was found relatively recently, which has the name SE. “Sweet corn lovers know this variety. It is an additional gene to the Sugar gene with improved properties. Has a great sweetness and shelf life and consumption, “- explained the co-owner of the VNIS company.

Another mutation of sweet corn that has been created by breeders today is the SH-type. “What is starch biosynthesis in this corn? It is based on monosaccharides – fructose, glucose and other monosaccharides that have an intense, sweet taste. Therefore, in another way, it is also called honey corn.

In addition to these three types, there are combined ones. In particular, it is a synergistic type, where all three mutations are present simultaneously in the grains, but not every grain has these mutations, and there is also a combined type, where each grain on the cob has the features of all three of the above mutations, ”the specialist explained.

Today, according to Miroslav Parij, his company has abandoned the selection of corn of the Sugar type. On the other hand, VNIS is working with the SH-type, the combined type, and has begun a program to create varieties of sweet corn for fresh consumption.

“We have a powerful breeding team, which includes graduate students, candidates of science. The breeding area of our company is represented by about 3 thousand items. In addition to sweet corn, we are also working on two types of vegetable corn, ”said Miroslav Pariy.

Business profitability of 300-400% is a reality

In his speech, Miroslav Pariy dwelled on the issue of profitability of the business of growing sweet corn. At the same time, the specialist noted that speaking about profitability, one should be well versed in the issue of corn consumption and the factors on which it depends.

“There are several directions. First, it is consumption on the fresh market. The second direction is freezing and the third is canning. For all these areas, there are actually the same characteristics that must correspond to a commercial product. In particular, an important criterion is the uniformity of pollination of the grains, the top of the cob, and insect damage, ”explained Miroslav Pariy.

The co-owner of the VNIS company also explained the essence of the concepts of superearly, medium and late corn hybrids.

“A plant is such a starch factory. Man has artificially created hybrids that have a short growing season. For example, in our breeding plots we have maize hybrids with full ripeness duration of 65 days. The size of such a plant is 20 cm from the ground, and the size of the cob is 4-5 cm, the number of rows of grains is from 8 to 12.

There is also tropical corn with a growing season of almost 365 days. This plant is 8 meters high with an ear of 50 cm. Each grain is 3-4 cm long.

It is between these two types that the entire spectrum of possible varieties lies. The best marketable products in our conditions are given by mid-late varieties of corn, because such hybrids are closer to their “ancestors” and, accordingly, they have more time for the accumulation of plastic substances.

Moreover, the earlier the corn hybrid, the fewer the rows of grains in it. Why is the grain row indicator so important for marketable products? The fact is that the fewer the rows of grains on the cob, the less cylindrical surface it has. Consumers, in turn, are attracted by the most cylindrical surface possible.

In addition, cobs with a small amount of kernels do not correspond to the shape they are accustomed to in canned food. Therefore, later hybrids are used in conservation. That is, with early hybrids, it can be said that it is quite difficult to obtain marketable products, ”the breeder said.

Miroslav Pariy also recommended those who want to enter the market with ultra-early hybrids to use the technology of transplanting seedlings followed by planting in the ground.

“Of course, this technology is economically costly, more risky, but if it works, then you can get a profitability of 300-400%. This is possible, provided that the technological process is streamlined, there are no errors in the growing process, and all ears of commercial quality are obtained. , favorable weather conditions and the presence of a sales market, ”he explained.

Miroslav Pariy drew the attention of the webinar participants to the fact that there are a lot of risks when growing superearly sweet corn varieties. The first risk is reduced seed germination. Provided the farmer plans to sow ultra-early hybrids as early as possible, this risk only increases.

The next risk is late spring frosts. They are a significant stress for the plant, which can reduce its yield and spoil its presentation.

An investment of $ 1 thousand / ha can bring profit in six months

Investments in the cultivation of sweet corn, according to Miroslav Parij, pay off within 6 months, provided that all technological operations for cultivation are completed and there is a sales market. At the same time, the actual size of investment in 1 ha of sweet corn crops is approximately $ 1,000.

“From this area, a farmer can collect about 50 thousand ears of corn, and even if he sells them at a price of 1 UAH / ear, he will not only be able to pay off the business, but will also receive a certain profit,” explained a specialist in the sweet corn market.

At the same time, Miroslav Pariy drew the attention of the online webinar participants to the fact that when calculating the amount of investment, both biological and chemical protection of plants, the cost of drip irrigation, seeds, costs of agricultural machinery and labor should be taken into account.

“New manufacturers need to understand that this market is not developed. But we must remember that we live in the electronic era. Therefore, for people who are just starting this business, I would recommend finding appropriate sites for selling sweet corn on the Internet.

However, first of all, before starting a serious business, I would advise you to buy 100 cobs of ready-made corn and try to sell them. And after gaining a successful experience in sales, it is worth taking up production, “said Miroslav Pariy.

It is very favorable for business development, according to the co-owner of the VNIS company, when there is an enterprise that is engaged in freezing vegetables next to the manufacturer. The fact is that the sales period for corn is rather short and most producers enter the market with their products at the peak of the harvest, when the price of one ear is 0.5-1 UAH. Freezing corn makes it possible to sell it throughout the year. At the same time, after defrosting, the corn does not lose its taste.

“Therefore, this is an unoccupied niche – you just need to find freezing capacity.

Another opportunity for producers is cooperation with canning factories. Having a portrait of the final consumer of their products, in this case, one can calculate a business plan for growing sweet corn, ”Miroslav Pariy shared practical advice on doing business.

Miroslav Pariy also said that Uzbekistan is the main producer of sweet corn in the post-Soviet countries – this is facilitated by the presence of a large amount of irrigated land and the climatic conditions of this country.

As for Ukraine, the local sweet corn market will continue to grow. And today the issue of creating a Union of Sweet Corn Producers, which will solve the problems of the industry, is urgent.
