The rapid rise in prices for onions in Ukraine was replaced by a fall

05/15/2020

Negative adjustments in last year’s onion segment were primarily due to a decrease in customer activity after the price of this product went up a week earlier

In Ukraine, prices for last year’s onions began to decline, according to EastFruit project analysts. Price cuts at the end of the season are called by farmers a forced measure. According to them, this is due to a rather large offer on the market last year of low quality products, as a number of farms refrained from sales until the second half of April in anticipation of an improvement in the market situation.

So, according to the daily monitoring of the project, only from the beginning of this week last year’s onion in Ukraine fell by an average of 10%. Today, these products are offered by manufacturers at a price of 11-14 UAH / kg ($ 0.41-0.52 / kg).

According to sellers, the negative adjustments in last year’s onion segment were primarily due to a decrease in buyer activity after the price of this product went up a week earlier. In addition, onions that were on sale were often of poor quality, which made marketing difficult.

Also, it is worth noting that at the moment the main offer in the onion market of high quality in Ukraine is imported products from Poland, the Netherlands and Uzbekistan, while the supply of high-quality onions from local farms is rather insignificant.

As a result, last year’s onions on the Ukrainian market are now on average 32% cheaper than last year’s same period. Moreover, market participants are quite pessimistic, as the quality of products in storage continues to deteriorate, and demand in this segment remains low.
