The average potato yield in 2019 compared to 2018 decreased by 7.2%

According to preliminary data, the potato production in Georgia in 2019, compared to 2018, decreased by 12.2%, the production of other vegetables increased by 14.0%, according to a survey of the crop production sector prepared by the National Statistics Service of Georgia.

Over the past 5 years, potatoes were produced in Georgia in the following volumes: in 2015 – 186.5 thousand tons, 2016 – 249.0 thousand tons, 2017 – 180.1 thousand tons, 2018 – 237.5 thousand tons, 2019 – 208.6 thousand tons. The harvest of other vegetables for the same period was: in 2015 – 152.3 thousand tons, 2016 – 141.7 thousand tons, 2017 – 125.9 thousand tons, 2018 – 142.2 thousand tons, 2019 – 162.1 thousand tons.

The average yield of potatoes in 2019, compared with 2018, also decreased – by 7.2%, and the average yield of other vegetables – increased by 14.8%.

The average potato yields over the past 5 years are as follows: in 2015 – 8.3 tons / ha, 2016 – 12.3 tons / ha, 2017 – 9.0 tons / ha, 2018 – 12.5 tons / ha, 2019 – 11.6 tons / ha.

The average yield of other vegetables for the same period was: in 2015 – 6.9 tons / ha, 2016 – 8.2 tons / ha, 2017 – 7.3 tons / ha, 2018 – 8.8 tons / ha, 2019 – 10.1 tons / ha.

Among vegetables whose yield in 2019 increased compared to 2018, the National Statistical Service named tomato – up to 13.4 tons / ha, cabbage – up to 33.1 tons / ha and onions – up to 6.8 tons / ha. Over the same period, the yield of cucumber decreased to 10.4 tons / ha and garlic to 2.4 tons / ha.

According to the results of 2019, the sown area of ​​annual crops as a whole in Georgia amounted to 206.6 thousand ha (which is 0.2% less than in 2018). Most of the sown area was allocated for corn – 74.9 thousand ha (36.2%), followed by wheat – 45.1 thousand ha (21.8%) and barley – 27.2 thousand ha (13 , 2%). Potatoes occupied 17.9 thousand ha (8.7%), annual and perennial herbs – 15.0 thousand ha (7.3%), vegetables – 12.7 thousand ha (6.1%), other crops – 13.9 thousand ha (6.7%).
