The activities of the FAO Investment Department in Ukraine have contributed to the expansion of access of food producers, in particular, fruit and vegetable products, to international sales markets, according to the relevant Ukrainian ministry.

The Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine highly appreciates the work of the Investment Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and expresses gratitude for the significant contribution to the development of international cooperation and strengthening of trade relations between Ukraine and other states.

This is stated in a letter from the relevant Ukrainian ministry to the leadership of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UkraineFood.org reports.

“The activities of the FAO Investment Department in Ukraine within the framework of the Project to Improve the Access of Ukrainian Agribusiness to Export Markets” contributed to the development of agri-food chains, expanding the access of Ukrainian food producers to international markets, increasing the level of food security in Ukraine and the world, “the letter says. Deputy Minister Taras Vysotsky.

The relevant ministry also believes that the implementation of a significant number of projects in Ukraine with the support of the FAO Investment Department has strengthened the export potential of Ukraine, contributed to the increase in agri-food trade, the promotion of Ukrainian products abroad and the diversification of exports.

“The organization of trainings for Ukrainian exporters of food products helped to raise business awareness about the possibilities of accessing international markets and obtaining the necessary skills to effectively promote products in foreign markets. Strengthening the ability to realize export potential is especially important for small and medium-sized businesses that are just starting export activities or mastering new markets “, – noted in the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

In addition, as noted in the letter, trade missions organized with the participation of the FAO Investment Department for Ukrainian producers of agricultural and food products (in particular, producers of confectionery and fruit and vegetable products, as well as honey) contributed to strengthening international trade relations of Ukraine and the formation of a positive image of Ukrainian products for abroad, and also allowed Ukrainian companies to develop useful contacts in promising countries for export.

Also, the MEDT stressed that the measures implemented by the Investment Department of FAO allowed not only to expand the geography of exports of Ukrainian products, but also contributed to an increase in the level of communication, international cooperation and strengthening of interstate diplomatic relations.

“It is very pleasant that our efforts were noticed not only by Ukrainian business, from which we regularly receive thanks, but also by the government. Despite the fact that the Project has already been completed, our partners – industry associations, now have all the necessary tools to successfully continue the expansion of Ukrainian products with high added value in the markets of other countries of the world, because we never did all the work for them, but focused on transferring knowledge and experience to them, ”says Andriy Yarmak, Project Manager and Economist of the FAO Investment Department.

It should be noted that the Project to Improve Access of Ukrainian Agribusiness to Export Markets is a joint project of FAO and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), within the framework of which unique fundamental studies of priority countries for the export of Ukrainian products were carried out, a lot of trainings for industry associations and representatives agribusiness and dozens of successful trade missions to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the USA and the EU. The project’s activities were aimed at showing examples of the best approaches to the operational analysis of the prospects for the export of individual goods and the prospects for the export of individual companies and transfer the maximum amount of experience in successful product promotion to industry associations of Ukraine. The project collaborated with fruit and vegetable, organic and beekeeping associations and unions, as well as with the associations “Ukrkondprom” and “Milk Mills of Ukraine”.

“It is very pleasant that our approaches are now very actively adopted even by representatives of those associations and industries that did not participate in projects and trainings, but studied them from our publications. I believe that Ukraine is only at the beginning of the path of developing the export of non-raw food products, and for success on this path, the maximum unification of individual industries is needed, which today still consider each other competitors and are very difficult to cooperate. This mentality needs to be changed, because it will be very difficult and even economically inexpedient for individual companies to break into supermarket shelves in rich countries. That is why, by the way, we have put so much effort into other projects to update the cooperative legislation of Ukraine “, – adds Andrey Yarmak.
