A small farmer in the berry market will survive only if he constantly reduces production costs and is very effective

A small farmer in the berry market will survive only on one condition – he will constantly fight for cost and will be very effective. Only then does he have a chance, says Yaroslav Molchun, founder and co-owner of the Ozeryana berry farm. About it writes SEEDS.org.ua according to Agravery.

“Around my farm with blueberries, about three hundred hectares of blueberries competitors. If they decide to get rid of me, it is enough for them to throw 20-30 tons of berries on the market – and that’s all, I am not. And they can still play with the price, which is not available to me. The result is the same if my cost is not fundamentally different, as low as possible.

And I grow the supposedly most liquid berry, if you listen to analysts. And these are not complaints – the same thing can happen to each of my colleagues in this market, ”adds Yaroslav Molchun.

“In general, I am a little embarrassed by the general mania to massively plant this or that culture, because“ experts say that it’s profitable. ” As a result, 8-10 years ago there was a boom in currants – the price is high, everything was planted, the price fell. Then a boom on raspberries, then – on a wild strawberry (strawberry). And then they make up, because there is no price, ”adds Yaroslav Molchun.

“Recently, there has been a hype in honeysuckle. This is generally a miracle, because Europe does not buy it, consumers do not know, but when the hype for blueberries ended, it was necessary to push something.

One familiar owner of the nursery said in many places that this is the culture of the future, in 2018 he wrote that he had a pre-order for 30 hectares of honeysuckle. And now there is no information, and those who have this berry are making bushes.

But they like to cash in on this aspiration of hype. Under the guise of selling low-quality seedlings, give unprofessional advice. I had a crop failure in 2017 due to our pseudo-specialists who advised me of miracles with bushes. Therefore, you can give only one piece of advice – look for and check the information, ”advises Yaroslav Molchun.
