The first Ukrainian blueberry is already on the market – prices are twice as high as last year

06/10/2020

A higher price level for blueberries in Ukraine compared to last year is due to a delay in the ripening season of berries by an average of 7-10 days

According to EastFruit analysts, in Ukraine the first offers of locally produced blueberries appeared on the market in Ukraine. True, so far, we are talking only about very small consignments of berries from private greenhouses in the western region of the country.

Producers are trying to sell the first Ukrainian blueberries at a higher price than imported products, arguing this with higher taste and freshness. At the moment, proposals for the sale of Ukrainian blueberries come at a price of 400-450 UAH / kg ($ 15-17 per kg) in small wholesale. For comparison, imported blueberries from Spain are offered in bulk at an average of 300 UAH / kg (about $ 11 per kg).

In 2019, by this time, the market already had the first batch of Ukrainian blueberries from open ground grown in the southern regions of the country and in Transcarpathia. Then you could buy blueberries at 200-240 UAH / kg ($ 7.5-9.4 per kg), that is, on average, two times cheaper than this year. On June 10, 2019, imported blueberries were sold at prices ranging from $ 6 to $ 9 per kg. Also, as we see, is much cheaper than today.

A higher price level for blueberries in Ukraine compared with last year is due, of course, to a delay in the ripening season of berries by an average of 7-10 days. Also, it is worth noting that the significant losses suffered by producers of blue berries due to frost and other natural disasters. Therefore, despite the entry into the fruiting of new significant areas of blueberries in 2020, many market participants doubt that the supply of berries will grow and are optimistic about the prospects for the season.

We also note that the first blueberry from open ground should appear on the Ukrainian market in about a week.
