Supply is growing dynamically in Moldova and the price of early cherries is falling

05/22/2020

The beginning of the third decade of May is characterized by a very high variation in prices and qualities of early cherries

In the second decade of May, wholesale prices for cherries in Moldova decreased by about one and a half times – from 50-70 lei / kg ($ 2.82-3.95 / kg) to 35-45 lei / kg ($ 1.97-2.54 / kg). According to experts of agricultural producers’ organizations, this is connected “with the natural course of things: early cherries ripen not only in the south, but also in other regions of the country, there are more sellers — farmers with small gardens, but already oriented, are gradually adding to them. for commodity production. “

However, the bulk of the proposals for the sale of early cherries in the Moldovan fruit and vegetable market (in its online segment, at least) is still formed by rural householders picking fruit in their personal plots. The quality of these products is often incorrect to define as low – rather “artisanal”: the diameter of the berries is less than 26 mm, the ripeness is heterogeneous, and sorting and packaging in “civilian” consumer packaging is often out of the question. However, this category of sellers is very responsive, willingly discussing with small wholesale and retail buyers the terms of delivery and price (it often gravitates to the lower boundary of the mentioned range).

Farmers with small product gardens, in the process of selling early cherries, primarily interact with intermediaries – small delivery services (by the way, serving the client base of social networks from the Internet) and owners and sellers of fruit and vegetable stalls. Prices in this segment of small wholesale and retail are much higher.

In principle, the beginning of the third decade of May is characterized by a very high variance in prices and qualities of early cherries (at the same time, in the competing strawberry segment, both tend to a reasonable unification). According to the Association of Manufacturers and Exporters of Moldova Fruct, the uncertain situation in the local market for early cherries will continue until the end of the month, when, finally, the stationary fruit and vegetable markets of Chisinau resume their work.
