Russia: drainage season nears completion

The season for the sale of plums this year ends in virtually the same terms as last

Most gardeners in the Russian Federation have already announced the actual completion of the season for selling plums, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. Today only a few farms are selling in small batches. At the same time, active demand allowed producers to raise prices for plums at the very end of the season.

At the moment, only residual consignments of plums from local farms are on sale, which producers offer at 35-60 rubles / kg ($ 0.46-0.79 / kg), which, on average, is 1.5 times more expensive than at the end of the last working week.

According to market operators, the season for selling plums this year ends practically at the same time as last. But at the same time, prices for plums were kept at a much lower level compared to last year’s season. The reason for this situation, according to manufacturers, was the low quality characteristics of these stone fruits.

Note that, despite the rise in prices for plums, Russian gardeners in the current season are forced to sell these stone fruits on average 35% cheaper than in the same period last year. It should also be added that, in general, manufacturers were unhappy with the outgoing season. Among the main negative factors, they name the low quality of local plums due to the hot weather and rather tough competition from the imported stone fruit production from Moldova.
