Current prices for watermelons in the Russian Federation are record-breaking over the past 5 years

Wholesale companies in Russia this week faced a supply shortage of high quality watermelons. According to the daily monitoring of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project, the weather conditions this summer were not the most favorable for the ripening of these melons. So, due to high humidity in the first half of the summer, there was a massive defeat of fields with melon fungal diseases, and in the second half of the summer, the harvest in the main production regions was seriously affected by drought.

By the middle of the week, producers are ready to sell watermelons at 15-25 rubles / kg ($ 0.20-0.34 / kg), which is on average 45% more expensive than a week earlier.

Farmers attribute the rise in prices in this segment to the imbalance of supply and demand in the market. After the end of the season for selling medium varieties, the supply of watermelon sharply decreased, since many Russian melon growers in the current season had problems with the yield of late varieties of watermelon. But the demand for products in the last 2 weeks continues to grow rapidly.

At the same time, it should be noted that today the price of watermelons in the Russian Federation is already on average 4 times more expensive than at the beginning of September last year. According to the producers themselves, the current prices for watermelons are record-breaking over the past 5 years!
