Polish farmers are actively raising prices for white cabbage new crop

06/11/2020

The production of super-early varieties on farms actually ended, and cabbage of later varieties was not yet on sale

Polish producers of white cabbage manage to actively raise prices amid a seasonal reduction in the supply of these products from local farms, EastFruit project analysts said. According to market operators, the main reason for the rise in price of early cabbage was the off-season period, when the production of super early varieties on farms actually ended, and cabbage of later varieties was not yet on sale.

In particular, today Polish producers offer early cabbage at a price of $ 0.45-0.61 / kg, which is on average 25% more expensive than at the end of last working week.

Market participants explain the current situation by the fact that the harvest of early cabbage in the current season was seriously affected by adverse weather conditions in the spring. For this reason, today local farms cannot form large enough batches of quality products to satisfy the current demand of wholesale companies and retail chains in this segment.

Note that at the moment, 2020 cabbage in Poland is already on average 2 times more expensive than in the same period last year. However, market players do not exclude that in the near future a downward price trend may return to the market as soon as medium-sized varieties of white cabbage begin to go on sale in large quantities.
