In the largest blackberry garden in Georgia – an area of 12 hectares, located in the Caspian region (Shida Kartli region, Eastern Georgia), more than 60 tons of the crop is expected to be harvested this year.

Modern garden LLC “Z.Z. Jgupi “with blackberries of the Triple Crown variety was equipped in 2018 with the support of the state project” Plant the Future “(part of the” United Agricultural Project “). State co-financing of the project in the direction of purchasing seedlings and arranging a drip irrigation system totaled 98.6 thousand lari ($ 32.1 thousand).

“The collection of blackberries in our garden began on July 19 and will last approximately 1 month – the duration depends on the weather. This year we are harvesting the second crop. Last year, we received 1.5 tons per hectare, this year, according to our calculations, the harvest will be, on average, 5-6 tons per hectare, “- said EastFruit director and co-founder of Z.Z. Jgupi »Zaza Kuprava.

As for the sale of blackberries, according to Zaza Kuprava, at this stage, the berries are sent to the domestic market, but export supplies will begin in a few days.

“In terms of exports, we were hampered by the situation with the coronavirus – due to the existing restrictions, we could not agree with exporters by the beginning of the season. But a few days ago the first agreement was concluded, and by the end of the month the export of our blackberries to Russia will begin. We hope that next year the situation will be sorted out and the 2021 season will be more successful, ”he said.

Blackberry Garden “Z.Z. Jgupi ”was recently examined by the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvili and the authorized in the Shida Kartli region Georgy Khodjevanishvili during a working trip to the region.

“As part of our Plant the Future project, another very successful farm has been created. This is the largest blackberry garden in Georgia, which is equipped with 12 hectares. In recent years, the direction of berry crops in the country has become very popular and is actively developing, but we are still at the initial stage, and very many links require assistance. Farmers need access to new technologies, consultations with agronomists, and the ministry is working on this. If it were not for the coronavirus pandemic, this year we would already have foreign consultants on specific industry crops, including berries. We will definitely start implementing this program from 2021, ”Levan Davitashvili said during his visit to the garden.

The minister noted that the country continues to develop refrigeration infrastructure, including for storing berries.

“The placement of the crop must take place in the conditions of the appropriate cooling and storage infrastructure. In this direction, we had a co-financing component for cooperatives. For individual farms, this component will be activated from 2021, ”the minister said.
