Moldovan gardeners adjust the summer forecast of apple harvest

09/15/2020

This year, the apple harvest was influenced by frosts and droughts, sharp drops between day and night temperatures, and hail, and pathogens.

As the scale of harvesting apples of autumn varieties increases, more and more agricultural producers are convinced of the need to revise the harvest forecast. This also affects the overall assessment of the apple harvest this year in Moldova, determined by regional and national organizations of farmers. Many of them agree by mid-September that the 2020 apple harvest in the Republic of Moldova will at best be at the level of 500 thousand tons, but will probably be even lower. This summer, the horticultural associations of Moldova predicted apple harvest in the range of 530-550 thousand tons. In 2019, according to statistics, apple production in the Republic of Moldova amounted to 611 thousand tons.

As the heads of large horticultural enterprises note, “if earlier the productivity of apple production in a particular season was influenced by individual weather factors, then this year all of them have an impact on the result: both frost and drought, sharp drops between day and night temperatures. , and hail, and pathogens. “

As a result, the actual yield is often significantly lower than the predicted one, even in intensive orchards equipped with irrigation systems, anti-freeze and anti-hail protection systems. The heads of some enterprises that have such orchards claim that certain varieties of apples, instead of the planned 50-60 t / ha, yield only 25-30 t / ha.

However, the total actual apple harvest in the Republic of Moldova will be most influenced by the harvesting of apples of such late varieties as Idared, Florina, Semerenko, etc. in semi-intensive and traditional orchards – without irrigation systems. Their share in the structure of apple plantations in the country (only 52 thousand hectares) is still very high.
