In total, centralized irrigation systems in Moldova – both modernized and those in need of modernization – are able to supply water to about 30 thousand ha of farmland

According to the Ministry of Agriculture MADRM, about 135 million euros will be required to modernize more or less operable centralized irrigation systems. The issue is particularly relevant in the context of the ongoing drought.

In February, at the annual conference of Water User Associations for AUAI Irrigation, the head of the Ministry of Agriculture of MADRM Ion Peru said that irrigation of agricultural land in Moldova is a “systemic problem.” To solve it as soon as possible with maximum efficiency and minimal risks, it is necessary to develop a specialized state program. By the beginning of this year, the state agency “Apele Moldovei” had almost two dozen centralized irrigation systems – outdated, but more or less efficient.

Over the past five years, Moldova has rehabilitated (at the expense of the US Millennium Challenge Corporation) and transferred (from the management of the Apele Moldovei Agency) to the management of non-governmental associations of water user farmers 10 irrigation systems that can supply water to 13 thousand hectares of farmland at 30 settlements of the Republic of Moldova.

In total, centralized irrigation systems in Moldova – both modernized and in need of modernization – are able to supply water to about 30 thousand hectares of farmland. In fact, in the country over the past few years, no more than 5-10 thousand hectares have been irrigated, mainly – orchards, berries, plantations of vegetables, as well as sugar beets.
