Low cherry yield expected in Poland

Some Polish producers reported that losses in their cherry orchards reached 80-90%

The season for picking cherries from local farms in Poland will begin in about 2 weeks, EastFruit project analysts reported citing fresh-market website. But many producers are already convinced that the harvest in 2020 will also not be high. A similar situation was observed in Poland last year. Weather conditions led to a decrease in cherry yield, and as a result, the yield reached 1.5 million tons, that is, 24% less than in 2018.

This year, spring frosts again swept through the gardens in several waves. Cherry trees were severely affected by frost in April, and at the end of May the situation with these stone fruits did not improve. Some growers reported that losses in their cherry orchards reached 80-90%.

According to Polish gardeners, the cherry harvest in the 2020 season will be relatively small. The situation with a fall in prices, which was observed in the domestic cherry segment in 2018, is unlikely to happen again in the current season. Moreover, the area under cherry orchards in Poland has significantly decreased this season. It is too early to predict the price level of domestic cherries, but today most market operators are sure that the price of cherries for freezing will be announced at a fairly high level. Compared to last year, there are not so many frozen berries stocks, and the demand for frozen fruits and berries in Poland continues to grow.
