In the new season, Ukraine can increase the export of walnuts by 45%

The export of walnuts from Ukraine in the 2021/22 marketing year is projected at about 108 thousand tons, which is 45% more compared to the previous season.

AgroPortal writes about this with reference to a review published by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Walnut exports are usually active between October and May.

In the previous season, according to industry sources, Ukrainian walnut exporters were hit by a drop in global demand as a result of COVID-19. At the end of the 2020/21 marketing year, exports are estimated at about 74 thousand tons, which is 29% less compared to 2019/2020 MY, when Ukraine supplied 105 thousand tons of products to the external market.

Domestic consumption of walnuts in 2021/22 MY will be at the level of 31 thousand tons, or 6% less than in the previous season.

It should be noted that in 2020/21 MY the consumption of nuts by the Ukrainians themselves amounted to 33 thousand tons (an increase of 1.6 times).

However, walnuts are not a staple food in Ukraine, so the level of their consumption fluctuates depending on the level of consumer income, the review says.
