Now 14 EU countries are developing an advertising campaign called Fruit Juice Matters, which aims to increase the consumption of fruit juices in the region

In the 2019/2020 season, the production of orange juice in the EU will decrease by 16% and will reach 81 thousand tons. This forecast was published by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its report, according to the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association. The main reason for the decline in juice production is the reduction in the gross harvest of oranges in Spain, which is the leading producer of these fruits. It is expected that the volume of oranges for processing in Italy will also significantly decrease compared to last year, due to a shortage of stocks of these fruits.

“Although orange juice is the most popular juice in the EU, its competition with other soft drinks and fruit juices is escalating. In recent years, this competition has significantly affected the decrease in orange juice consumption in the EU. In the 2019/20 season, consumption of orange juice is projected to continue the negative trend. Currently, fourteen EU countries, including Spain, are developing an advertising campaign called Fruit Juice Matters, which aims to increase the consumption of fruit juices in the region, ”says Ekaterina Zvereva, Director for Development of the UPA, with reference to USDA.

With regard to international trade, the EU remains a net importer of orange juice. So, in the season 2018/2019, the EU imported 657.6 thousand tons of this product, with a total value of $ 1.37 billion. Brazil is the main supplier of orange juice to the EU markets, which supplies almost 88% of the total volume of imported products. At the same time, last season the EU exported 60 thousand tons of orange juice, worth $ 149 million. The main importers of juice from the EU are Switzerland, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Japan, North Korea and China. However, experts predict that export figures for orange juice from the EU will decrease, while import indicators, on the contrary, will grow amid a significant decrease in production.
