In summer 2020, exports of cherries and apricots from Moldova decreased, plums – increased

About 50% of Moldovan apricot exports this year went to the market of neighboring Ukraine

According to the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova, in June-August of this year, Moldova exported 7.8 thousand tons of sweet cherries, as well as slightly more than 2 thousand tons of apricot. Over the same period last year, external supplies of these fruits from the country amounted to 12 thousand tons and 7 thousand tons, respectively.

About 50% of Moldovan apricot exports this year fell on the market of neighboring Ukraine (which is unusual, last year more than half of external supplies of apricot fell on the Russian market). In addition, about 150 tons of Moldovan apricots were supplied to Romania – this is the first experience of a relatively large export of these fruits to the European Union.

At the same time, in the summer of 2020, the export of Moldovan plums almost doubled compared to last year’s level. By the end of August, almost 16 thousand tons of these fruits were sent from the country to foreign buyers, including 11 thousand tons to the CIS countries and 4.8 thousand tons to the European Union (to Romania – 2.2 thousand tons, Poland – 1.4 thousand tons).

This is also a non-standard situation. Over the past two years, the bulk of external supplies of plums from Moldova, especially to the European market, fell on the period from the second half of September to the end of October. A significant summer export of plums was noted only in 2017, when in many countries of Europe and the CIS there was a poor harvest of stone fruits.
