In Russia, sales of greenhouse cucumber fell

04/03/2020

The complete lack of demand for greenhouse products and a significant increase in the supply of cucumber in the market caused prices to drop.

According to the daily monitoring of the EastFruit project, from the end of March in Russia there has been a tendency to decrease sales of greenhouse cucumber. Cucumber is now offered in the domestic market in sufficient quantities from both importers and local farms, while the pace of wholesale and retail trade, according to sellers, remains unsatisfactory. This was an unpleasant surprise for both importers and greenhouse plants.

According to market operators, the virtually complete absence of demand for greenhouse products and a significant increase in the supply of cucumber in the market stimulated a reduction in seller prices.

In addition to domestic producers, an imported cucumber made in Iran also entered the domestic market, the cost of which was identical to the cost of domestic products. Also on the market began to appear offers of cucumber from film greenhouses at an even lower price. As a result, the cost of smooth domestic-made cucumbers today has dropped to 45-70 rubles / kg ($ 0.57-0.89 / kg), which is on average 23% cheaper than a week earlier. Prices for cucumber over the week decreased by an average of 17% and at the moment, sales of these products are at a price of 80-120 rubles / kg ($ 1.02-1.53 / kg).

Also this week, the number of non-standard cucumber increased, which most manufacturers offered as second-class products at lower prices from 30rub / kg ($ 0.38 / kg). The film cucumber was offered at a price of 40-50 rubles / kg ($ 0.51-0.64 / kg).

At the same time, it is worth noting that the cost of smooth cucumber on the Russian market at the moment has decreased by an average of 35% compared to the same period last year. And prices for cucumber over the year fell by an average of 12%.
