Prices for borscht vegetables in Chisinau supermarkets for the year decreased by an average of 27%.

An audit of the fruit and vegetable departments of supermarkets in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Georgia and Tajikistan by the EastFruit team on June 30, 2020 showed that the sharpest decrease in retail prices in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, was noted in the category of so-called borscht vegetables (onion, beetroot, cabbage, carrots and potatoes). Compared to June 30, 2019, prices for these categories of goods in Chisinau supermarkets decreased by an average of 27%.

It is interesting to note that almost all types of vegetables of borsch set fell in price almost simultaneously – beetroot by 31%, carrots – by 30%, onions – by 27%, cabbage – by 25% and potatoes – by 22%. However, in spite of such a significant reduction in the retail price for the year, all these positions, except for potatoes, were the most expensive of all the countries where the audit was conducted. Only prices for potatoes in Moldova were slightly lower than in Ukraine.

We also note that over the year tomatoes in Moldova fell in price. The retail price of these vegetables fell 26% year on year. But the cucumber, on the contrary, has risen in price by 65% per year. These types of vegetables were also relatively expensive compared to other countries in the region.

The prices for fresh greens – parsley and dill, also declined over the year in Moldova. They were lower than in Ukraine, but higher than in Georgia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

The full results of the retail audit of fruit and vegetable departments of supermarkets in the quality of departments and services, quality of fruits and vegetables, assortment and prices are expected in the near future.
