In 2020, the agricultural area under vegetables, potatoes and melons expanded in Moldova

07/29/2020

According to statistical estimates, more than 89% of potatoes, 82% of vegetables and 55% of melons and gourds were planted in households and small farms

This year, vegetables and melons and potatoes occupy 69.2 thousand hectares in the country, which is 7% more compared to 2019, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova. Including the area under potatoes increased to 22.9 thousand hectares (+ 27.3%), vegetables in open ground – up to 39.6 thousand hectares (+ 8.2%). At the same time, the sowing of melons decreased by 27.2% – to 6 thousand hectares. According to statistical estimates, more than 89% of potatoes, 82% of vegetables and 55% of melons and gourds were planted in households and small farms.

In general, the information of the NBS is confirmed by the observations of the operators of the market of resources for agriculture, who previously informed the EastFruit correspondent of the high level of sales of vegetable seeds. Also consistent with the observations of representatives of organizations of agricultural producers, statistical data on the reduction of sowing of melons and gourds, they are confirmed by numerous testimonies of large farmers specializing in the cultivation of these products.

However, experts doubt such a significant expansion of potato crops. They also consider it important that in a number of districts of the northern zone of Moldova, due to late spring frosts, part of the crops of some vegetable crops died and were replanted.

Experts’ certain doubts about the reliability of statistical data are also caused by the fact that the bulk of agricultural land under potatoes and vegetables is concentrated in households. Accounting for production in them, in comparison with agricultural enterprises, is fraught with significant difficulties.
