Fresh apricot from the Southern Hemisphere at a price of $ 31 per kg began to enter the retail chains of Uzbekistan

EastFruit experts report that fresh apricots from the Southern Hemisphere at a price of $ 31 per kg began to arrive in supermarkets in Uzbekistan. This is possible due to the mirroring of the seasons – it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, and there they are harvesting fresh apricot. True, its transportation is very expensive, so the price tag is very high and is designed for consumers with a high level of income. In the summer, in Uzbekistan, apricots are sold at retail, usually cheaper than $ 1 per kg, or only slightly more expensive.

True, the origin of the apricot is doubtful – the price tags say that the apricot is from Argentina, but it is exhibited in a box from New Zealand.

According to Daria Ilyina, an international consultant to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in any case, importers had to pay high import duties on this apricot. “Neither New Zealand nor Argentina are among the countries most favored by trade with Uzbekistan, so the importer, most likely, had to pay 40% of the import duty and 15% VAT on the import of these products, which, of course, affected its price. In addition, sales of such products are limited, so there may be losses, since the product is fresh. This means that the supermarket also used a higher margin than local seasonal fruits, ”said Daria.

Uzbekistan is one of the world’s largest exporters of fresh apricot. In particular, following the results of 2018, it entered the top three world export leaders, exporting about 50 thousand tons of this product. It is possible that by the end of 2019, Uzbekistan will surpass this export record, as the export of Uzbek apricot only to the Russian market grew by 21%.
