Farmers of the southern regions of Russia began to sell onions a new crop

Winter onions will go on sale next week, subject to more favorable weather

The first consignments of winter onions from farms in the southern region began to enter the Russian market this season, analysts at EastFruit project said. According to project analysts, the season of winter onion sales in the Southern Federal District this year started almost at the same time as the year before.

To date, the offer of these products is still very small, since heavy rains impede the normal rate of harvest. As a result, manufacturers can only ship in small batches so far. The price of winter onions today varies between 25-30 rubles / kg ($ 0.35-0.42 / kg), which is on average 26% cheaper than the first lots of early onions in the same period last year.

More massively, according to producers, winter onions will begin to go on sale next week, subject to the establishment of more favorable weather.

As for the segment of last year’s onions, as Russian farmers note, they were forced to lower prices for these products again, citing weak demand. This is due to the fact that farms are actively sorting products in storage and at the same time many note a large percentage of substandard onions. So, today the price of high-quality onions of the harvest of 2019 on the market is announced in the range of 15-25 rubles / kg ($ 0.21-0.35 / kg), which is on average 16% cheaper than at the end of last working week .

It is worth noting that the deterioration in the pace of trade in last year’s onion segment is also observed against the background of fairly stable supplies of new crop imports, primarily from Egypt and Kazakhstan. The price of early imported onions is announced in the range of 20-27 rubles / kg ($ 0.28-0.38 / kg).
