Export of Moldovan plum of harvest 2020 to EU started earlier than usual

A significant share of European supplies of plums from the Republic of Moldova at the moment falls on Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany

According to experts from the Federation of Agricultural Producers of Moldova (FARM), in August, about half of the entire country exported plums are sent to the European Union. This year’s situation is atypical: usually active supplies of Moldovan plums to EU countries begin not earlier than September, and before the beginning of this month, the main direction of export supplies of early varieties of plums from Moldova is the Russian market.

Experts explain this transformation of the Moldovan plum export structure this year by several main reasons. Firstly, the projected significant decline in plum harvest in the main producing countries of these fruits in the European Union. It is also worth noting that a significant share of European supplies of plums from the Republic of Moldova currently falls on Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. The “resort” European countries, in particular – Montenegro, also became a noticeable direction. The export of plums to Romania (and in previous years it was the main market for Moldovan plums in the EU) is also significant, but not too large so far, since this country grows a lot of its own early varieties of plums.

In general, the European export of summer plums helped to keep prices for this product on the Moldovan market in August at a relatively high level – 5-7 lei / kg ($ 0.29-0.41 / kg). This month of last year, the average prices for early dessert plums for export were lower by about 15-20%.

The supplies of Moldovan plums to Russia are not yet too large, as traders say, because of the still quite large summer set of “alternative” fruits, as well as the decline in the purchasing power of Russians.
