The Poland Competition and Consumer Protection Authority has launched proceedings against the group that owns the Biedronka chain of stores for misleading customers about the country of origin of fruits and vegetables.

It is reported by Agri-gator with reference to Eurointegration.

Biedronka is a network of more than 3 thousand discount stores in more than a thousand settlements of Poland. By the number of stores, it is the largest commercial retail chain in Poland.

According to consumer complaints, confirmed by the control of the Trade Inspectorate, false information about the country of origin of fruits and vegetables appeared on the plates in Biedronka chain stores.

“I accused Jeronimo Martins Polska of violating the interests of consumers by misleading them about the country of origin of fruits and vegetables. For many, this is key information that can determine the purchase of a product,” said the head of the antitrust department Tomasz Khrostny.

According to him, consumers are increasingly guided by economic patriotism in their choice and willingly choose domestic goods. Inaccurate information in Biedronka stores may distort their purchase decision.

Jeronimo Martins Polska faces a fine of up to 10% of annual turnover for misleading consumers.

The Polish government called on Poles to buy Polish products to support the local economy during the coronary virus crisis.
