Dear tangerines, apples and potatoes but cheap vegetables – how will the cost of the festive table in Ukraine change

12/26/2019

The appreciation of the hryvnia against the dollar and the euro contributed to lower prices for imported fruits and vegetables

Weekly monitoring of wholesale prices for vegetables, fruits and nuts from EastFruit shows that the festive table of Ukrainian residents this year will cost about the same as a year earlier. Vegetable prices fell very significantly, but fruit prices, on the contrary, rose.

“The appreciation of the hryvnia against the dollar and the euro contributed to lower prices for imported fruits and vegetables. This happened, for example, with greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes, which now come to Ukraine almost exclusively from other countries. The decrease in wholesale prices for cucumber and tomato was 12% compared to last year, which is almost the same as the percentage of Ukrainian currency appreciation, ”said Andrei Yarmak, economist at the investment department of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

But with traditional vegetables – everything is not so simple. Borsch set of vegetables fell very sharply compared to last year – more than one and a half times. But potatoes, on the contrary, are now sold one and a half times more expensive than a year earlier at the same time. On the whole, for potatoes and borsch vegetables, the price reduction amounted to 34%.

“The decline in potato harvest in Ukraine in 2019 due to adverse weather conditions led to unjustified excitement in the market and a surge in demand for these tubers. As a result, wholesale prices during harvest increased to 12 UAH / kg and provoked a sharp increase in potato imports from Russia. However, now potato prices in Ukraine are falling under pressure from imports and low demand. However, they are much higher than last year, ”said Kateryna Zvereva, Director for Development of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPRA).

“The situation with prices for traditional vegetables, especially for beets and carrots, remains critical for the opposite reason – it is difficult to sell them even at the lowest price, since the offer significantly exceeds domestic demand. In this regard, growers should look for alternative markets. In the meantime, the wholesale price of carrots and beets is 55-60% lower than at the same time a year earlier, onions also fell 55%, but a year ago prices were abnormally high, and cabbage fell 44% over the year, ” – reports Katerina Zvereva.

Despite the fact that besides apple and pear, now all other fruits are imported at wholesale markets, their prices have also risen sharply. Even the strengthening of the national currency did not help.

“Apple prices rose 83% due to a marked decline in production, but prices for Ukrainian-made pear remained unchanged. At the same time, the base for comparing apple prices was too low, so now apple prices are more likely to be close to long-term average indicators, ”notes Andrei Yarmak.

Of imported fruits, the prices for tangerines rose most sharply – by 75% per year. Lemons went up by 30%, oranges – by 17%, and bananas – by 40%. The wholesale price of the walnut kernel also rose by an average of 25% over the period.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Ukrainians began to consume more fresh berries in the winter. Due to this, the prices of imported raspberries, blueberries, strawberries (strawberries) and blackberries – the most popular consumer items, have declined significantly. The appreciation of the national currency and the increase in the volume of purchases of berries by importers, allowed to reduce prices by an average of 15-20%.

It should be noted that EastFruit retail monitoring is carried out in Ukraine in conjunction with UPOA and APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits, which allows for an objective assessment of the dynamics of wholesale prices for vegetables, fruits, berries and nuts.
