Contrary to forecasts, growth in prices for last year’s apples continued in Moldova

03/05/2020

In late February – early March of this year, wholesale demand prices for apples of almost all varieties increased by an average of 1 lei / kg to 12-15 lei / kg ($ 0.72-0.90 / kg)

By the middle of last month, the increase in prices for export-quality apples of almost all varieties in the Moldovan wholesale market slowed down or even stopped. As EastFruit reported, this gave grounds for gardening associations’ marketing services to suggest that a tangible increase in the average, “working” price for an apple-crop in 2019 is hardly possible in the near future. However, contrary to cautious forecasts, in late February – early March of this year, wholesale demand prices for apples of almost all varieties increased by an average of 1 lei / kg to 12-15 lei / kg ($ 0.72-0.90 / kg).

Inspired by this fact, as well as the accelerating process of reducing product balances in refrigerators, the leaders of many trading and agricultural companies hope that by the end of March, prices for apples for export on the domestic market of Moldova will increase to 16 lei / kg, and possibly more.

Optimism to sellers adds a fairly good quality of products left in the refrigerators of agricultural enterprises. As well as the presence of demand for apples from buyers focused on supplying the domestic market. Already now, in individual chains of Chisinau supermarkets, retail prices for the highest quality apple have increased to 18-20 lei / kg ($ 1.08-1.15 / kg). A similar price level for this product was last observed in April-May 2018, when, due to a shortage of high-quality domestic apples, some supermarket chains brought in more than 500 tons of goods from Poland.
