The coronavirus pandemic is having a negative impact on China’s fruit imports, and this is reflected in the main suppliers

EastFruit has written extensively about the dynamic development of fruit and berry production in Peru in recent years. One of the most striking events of 2019 was the sharp breakthrough of this country to the first place in the world blueberry exports, which Chile held for many years. At the same time, one of the key markets for fruit sales for the country, which provided opportunities for growth in production and exports, was China.

However, the coronavirus pandemic is having a negative impact on China’s fruit imports, and this is reflected in the main suppliers. Thus, according to Asiafruit, citing Fresh Fruit Peru, the Covid-19 pandemic led to a 56.4% drop in Chinese imports of Peruvian fruits in the first half of 2020. During this period, China imported fruits worth $ 4.44 billion, which is 28% less than a year earlier. Peruvian exports accounted for 1.8% of this total, equivalent to $ 82 million.

The drop in supplies from Peru led the country to drop one line and took ninth place in the ranking of suppliers of fruits to China, yielding eighth position to Egypt. Peru’s main fruits shipped to China in the first half of 2020 were grapes (32% of the total), avocados (30%) and tangerines (19%).

Supplies of Peruvian fruits to Europe also declined in the first half of the year, albeit at a much slower pace. Exports to this market fell 6% – less than the average drop – to $ 1.291 billion. Nevertheless, Peru even managed to climb two positions in the ranking of fruit suppliers to the EU, overtaking Ecuador and Vietnam. As a result, in the first half of 2020, Peru was ranked 13th among the largest suppliers of fruits to the EU, the source said.
