At the end of the season, Russian melon growers reduce prices for watermelon

Producers were forced to reduce the selling prices for the remaining batches of watermelon due to low quality characteristics

The supply of watermelons from local farms in the Russian market has already been reduced to a minimum, since most local farmers are completing the sale of these melons, analysts of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project report.

It should be noted that the season for the sale of watermelons ends in virtually the same terms as the year before. However, the decrease in the offered volumes of this berry on the market did not entail a significant rise in price, but rather the opposite. Producers were forced to reduce the selling prices for the residual batches of watermelon due to the low quality characteristics of these products.

So, at the moment, the remaining batches of watermelons go on sale at 12-22 rubles / kg ($ 0.16-0.29 / kg), which is on average 16% cheaper than a week earlier.

But at the same time, despite the decline in selling prices at the end of the season, the cost of watermelons in the Russian Federation today is on average 3 times higher than at the end of the season last year. According to the melon growers themselves, such a price difference is due to the fact that the gross yield of this product this season has significantly decreased due to unfavorable weather conditions. So, in the first half of summer, these melons suffered from excess moisture after heavy rains, and already in the second half of summer, drought and heat were observed in the central and southern regions of the country.
