Will Ukrainian producers of young potatoes be able to sell their produce?

Many farmers expanded the area under early potatoes from 5-10 ha last year to 100 ha in the current year due to the good price in the 2019/2020 marketing year.

Due to the overproduction of young potatoes this year, in case of problems with sales in the markets, producers can leave it in the fields. This was announced by the Executive Director of the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers (UAPK) Oksana Ruzhenkova.

“We suspect that at the end of May – June, potatoes will be left in the fields, because the areas are seriously expanded precisely under the early potatoes,” she said.

According to Oksana Ruzhenkova, many farmers expanded the area under this crop from 5-10 hectares last year to 100 hectares in the current year due to the good price in the marketing year 2019/2020 (June 2019 – May 2020) during the marketing period.

She admits that producers will not be able to sell the entire volume grown, since the quality of potatoes for beginners will not meet the requirements of supermarkets, reports SEEDS.org.ua according to the UN.

“Many hoped to make money on Easter, when the potatoes were 60-80 hryvnia per kg, but no one expected quarantine,” commented the specialist.

At the moment, the cost of Ukrainian young potatoes in stores is 30-45 hryvnias versus 18 hryvnias for Egyptian, which is sold under the guise of a young, and 24 hryvnias for Azerbaijani, which in fact is re-exported Russian, because there were problems with logistics and transportation of products during the quarantine period long distances.

At the same time, she noted that now Ukraine does not export young potatoes, which were previously mainly bought by Belarus and Russia.

The possibility of deliveries to the Customs Union was limited in 2017 by unified quarantine rules; in a few years, about 10 enterprises have mastered the mechanism of quarantine-free plots, so Ukraine can no longer compete on the Belarusian market with Russian potatoes due to the lengthy process of creating free plots.

According to representatives of breeding companies, they increased sales of seeds several times and mainly of early varieties. Accordingly, it is too early to make a forecast about the volume and level of sales of medium and late potatoes.
