Ukrainian greenhouse plants are forced to reduce the price of cucumbers at the beginning of the season

02/15/2020

Pressure on prices was exerted by the presence on the market of cheaper imported cucumbers

Cucumber prices in the Ukrainian market continue to decline, EastFruit project analysts said. Market operators attribute this situation to an increase in the supply of cucumber for a new turnover from local farms. According to the project, to date, almost all greenhouse plants in Ukraine have begun to sell these products.

Despite the fact that the supply of imported cucumber from Turkey continued to decline, prices for it still continued to decline. Representatives of wholesale companies attributed this to a sharp deterioration in the quality of the products offered, in connection with which many wholesale buyers preferred the local cucumber. For this reason, sellers were forced to lower selling prices, and by the end of the week they offered Turkish cucumber at a price of 42-44 UAH / kg ($ 1.72-1.80 / kg), which is on average 10% lower than a week earlier.

Meanwhile, the supply of cucumbers from local greenhouses continued to increase, which provoked a further decline in prices for these products. In addition, the pressure on prices was exerted by the presence on the market of cheaper imported cucumbers. Thus, closer to the end of the week, Ukrainian greenhouse plants offered their products at a price of 60-70 UAH / kg ($ 2.45-2.86 / kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.

It is worth noting that the price level for greenhouse cucumber in Ukraine has already dropped to last year’s level in the same period. Given this fact, as well as the fact that many Ukrainian households have relied specifically on cucumber this season, it is possible that in the near future prices for these products will begin to decline quite quickly in the face of increased competition in the domestic market.
