Turkey breaks record for sweet cherry exports thanks to increased supplies to EU

By the end of the season, export of cherries from Turkey is projected to reach $ 250 million

In January-July 2020, the volume of exports of sweet cherries from Turkey to 60 countries of the world exceeded $ 212 million, Anadolu agency reports with reference to the Association of Exporters of the Aegean Region of Turkey.

Thus, sweet cherry exporters from Turkey have updated the record of the last season.

In January-July 2019, 88 thousand tons of cherries were supplied abroad for $ 183.159 million.

The TOP-3 importers of the fruits of this crop included Germany ($ 88 million), Russia ($ 49 million) and Austria ($ 13 million).

By the end of the season, cherry exports from Turkey are projected to reach $ 250 million.

In the first half of the year, the largest increase in the supply of Turkish cherries (by 121%) was recorded in Austria – from $ 5.844 million to $ 12.926 million.

Exports to Italy in January-July increased by 113% – to $ 6.188 million, to the UK – by 121% – to $ 3.354 million.

Cherry exports to China exceeded $ 4 million

Hayrettin Uchak, head of the Aegean Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, told Anadolu that at the beginning of the season, producers and exporters were counting on $ 200 million worth of exports.

“This goal has already been achieved. During the pandemic, the demand for Turkish cherries from Turkey has increased due to their high quality, ”he said.
