The share of apples of medium and low quality is increasing on the Ukrainian market

02.10.2020

The current prices for apples of varieties subject to storage in Ukraine have already decreased to 6-14 UAH / kg ($ 0.21-0.49)

The new apple season in Ukraine is entering an active phase, but so far it does not repeat the scenario of the previous one, although many market participants have often voiced negative forecasts for the expected level of production.

According to the project “APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits”, the current prices for apples of varieties to be stored in Ukraine have already decreased to 6-14 UAH / kg ($ 0.21-0.49). A week earlier, prices reached UAH 16 / kg ($ 0.56) within their maximum limits, and in early September they varied from UAH 14 / kg to UAH 18 / kg ($ 0.49-0.64). Moreover, in view of the gradual increase in the supply of apples on the Ukrainian market and the high share of medium and low quality products, the current negative trend in prices can only strengthen in the near future.

In the same period of the previous season, no such price fluctuations were recorded on the Ukrainian market, and during August-October 2019, the range of wholesale prices for apples did not go beyond UAH 8-12 / kg ($ 0.28-0.42). Thus, it is too early to say that the market situation will develop similarly to the previous season, especially since the current price range is much wider than in 2019.

Topical questions will be answered at the tenth anniversary international conference “Apple Business of Ukraine-2020”:

  • will the season be extremely scarce?
  • will production decrease by more than 30%?
  • will apple exports grow?
  • Will there be an overproduction of apples in a year?

More detailed information about the conference is on the project website.
