On the Ukrainian market, the supply of tomatoes from local plants is growing, prices are falling

08.08.2020

Wholesale companies and retail chains began to refuse from regular consignments of imported products, referring to the higher quality indicators of Ukrainian tomatoes

As previously reported by the experts of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project, the current season for the segment of greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine is very tense, and is accompanied by constant price fluctuations.

At the same time, the main factor that leads to regular changes in the market situation is the abnormally cold spring of 2020, which is why the crop rotations of tomatoes in greenhouse plants have significantly shifted.

Since mid-July 2020, market participants have repeatedly faced problems with the supply of greenhouse tomatoes, and open field products, due to a decrease in production and unsatisfactory quality, could not compensate for the insufficient volume of tomatoes on the market as a whole.

The preliminary forecasts of the analysts of APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits regarding the import of tomatoes to Ukraine in the summer months came true. Insufficient volumes of local products led to a gradual increase in prices in this segment, and since the last ten days of July, the first shipments of tomatoes from Poland and Turkey began to enter the Ukrainian market. At the same time, in previous seasons, active import of tomatoes to Ukraine began only in the second half of September, the project analysts state.

Despite the fact that the quality of imported tomatoes, in most cases, did not suit buyers, Ukrainian companies could not completely refuse to purchase due to the lack of an alternative at the prices declared by external suppliers. In early August, greenhouse tomatoes from Poland were offered in the range of 25-26.50 UAH / kg, and lower quality, Turkish, products at 18.50-20 UAH / kg.

But already from the second half of this week, the situation on the tomato market in Ukraine began to stabilize, and operators noted a gradual increase in the volume of new batches of products from local plants. If in the previous week the range of prices for tomatoes in Ukraine was 26-30 UAH / kg, then by the end of the outgoing one it dropped to 24-28 UAH / kg. At the same time, representatives of wholesale companies and retail chains almost simultaneously began to refuse from regular lots of imported products, referring to the higher quality indicators of Ukrainian tomatoes.

According to analysts, the downward price trends in the segment of greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine may continue in the future, as the new turnover in farms is just beginning to gain momentum.
