Now South Africa wants to restrict potato imports from the EU

The South African market suffered from a drop in demand for potatoes and their processed products, and a possible dumping by the EU could lead to disastrous consequences.

The number of countries where market participants are seriously concerned about the influx of cheap frozen fries from the EU continues to grow, and already the South African Potato and Vegetable Processors Forum (PVPF) is demanding the government to limit imports of these products, EastFruit reports, citing the local Sunday Times.

Recall that the potato processing sector in the EU has been seriously affected by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, since it was the closed HoReCa enterprises that were the main consumers of these products. As a result, suppliers of these products from the EU began to diligently seek new markets, often offering their products at bargain prices, which naturally caused the outrage of local players in these countries.

So, we have already reported protests against imports of products from the EU in the New Zealand market, and factories in Australia have directly accused EU suppliers of dumping. Moreover, the Netherlands has even managed to export potatoes intended for french fries to the fresh market in Ukraine, thus bypassing the need to dispose of unprocessed quantities.

Now South Africa is also actively opposed to the import of these products. According to representatives of the potato industry in this country, the local market has already suffered from the fall in demand for potatoes and their processed products, and a possible dumping by the EU could lead to disastrous consequences.

“We have already faced a significant drop in prices well below cost, and a huge amount of unsold stocks of processed products. Another hit with an influx of imports at knock-on prices will be a disaster for the sector, ”said André Yoste, head of the Potatoes SA.
