Moldova resumed production of planting material of grapes of the highest biological category

About 20 authorized nurseries of fruit crops operate in Moldova, about a third of them specialize in the production of planting material for grapes

The Scientific and Practical Institute for Fruit Growing and Food Technologies (IȘPHTA) laid the mother planting material of the biological category “Bază” grapes of technical and table grapes (Moldova). Starting in 2021, the institute will start selling seedlings of the “Certificate” category to private nursery farms for propagation. Financial assistance in the amount of about $ 120 thousand for the implementation of this project was provided to the Institute by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Romanian government.

Currently, there are about two dozen authorized nurseries of fruit crops in Moldova, about a third of them specializing in the production of planting material for grapes of local and foreign selection. Experts acknowledge that the quality of cultivated planting material (biological purity of varieties and clones, phytosanitary condition) often leaves much to be desired. From this point of view, the resumption of the reproduction of high-quality material after a twenty-year hiatus will give Moldovan viticulture a tangible impetus for development.

Currently, about 130 thousand hectares of vineyards are officially registered in the country, including 12.6 thousand hectares of table varieties (another 3-4 thousand hectares of vineyards are in a “semi-abandoned” state, but bear fruit). During the last five years, 1-2 thousand hectares of new vineyards are planted annually in the country.
