Moldova predicts late start of sales and low prices for local watermelons

07/14/2020

This year, already in June, prices for imported watermelons in the Moldovan market were set at a relatively low level – 7-8 lei / kg ($ 0.41-0.47 / kg)

According to experts of agricultural organizations, this year the area of melons and gourds in the country decreased by about half compared to last year’s level (according to statistics for 2019 – 8.3 thousand hectares).

Farmers explain the reduction in plantations of these crops as an unfavorable combination of weather factors: prolonged autumn-winter drought and then late spring frosts. In addition, the lack of moisture (including water for irrigation) and the very high temperature in certain periods of June led to the fact that part of one part of the plantations of melons (watermelon) “burned out” completely, the other part will give a very small crop. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the main share of plantations of these crops is traditionally concentrated in only a few areas of the south and center of Moldova.

It is also worth noting that last year the area under melons, under the influence of high prices for these products in previous years, increased according to the data of the Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova by 55%. For this reason, as well as due to active imports, prices for watermelons at the end of summer and last fall fell markedly.

This year, already in June, prices for imported (mainly Greek) watermelons in the Moldovan market were set at a relatively low level – 7-8 lei / kg ($ 0.41-0.47 / kg). Given this circumstance, farmers fear that in August, as the local crop of watermelons is massively sold on the market, prices for these products will drop significantly.
