In 2019, onion exports from Sughd region (Tajikistan) sharply decreased

02/14/2020

Decrease in their own onion production forced entrepreneurs to import 23 500 kg of fresh onion into the region for a total customs amount of $ 2.5 thousand.

A reduction of 1,000 hectares of acreage allotted for onions in the Sughd region in 2019 compared to 2018 led to a decrease in the gross harvest of this crop and a reduction in its export. Moreover, in the current season, the Sogd region was forced to import onions.

Thus, according to the regional customs department in the Sughd region, in 2019, 53,253 tons of onions from the Sughd region were exported in total, which is 23,512 tons less than in 2018. In value terms, last year, onions were shipped $ 343.7 thousand, which is $ 135 thousand less than the previous year. Onions were exported in 2019 at prices higher than the prices of 2018.

In addition, in 2019, vegetable growers of the region did not export dried onions. And in 2018, the volume of its deliveries was estimated at 10 tons for a total of $ 1,503.

Even with a sharp reduction in onion exports, this product, both in quantitative and in monetary terms, retained its leadership among fruits and vegetables exported from the Sogd region.

Decrease in their own onion production forced entrepreneurs to import 23 500 kg of fresh onion into the region for a total customs amount of $ 2.5 thousand.

Specialists of the industry and the farmers themselves associated the decline in onion production in Sughd region in 2019 with the fact that in 2018, farmers in the region harvested a very high crop, but could not sell it profitably against the background of an excess supply. At the same time, farmers incurred certain financial costs for its collection, packaging, storage. Some vegetable growers, having no markets and funds for the purchase of packaging material, transportation and storage of onions, were forced to leave a significant part of the grown crop directly in the field. Most of those farmers, despite the explanatory work of specialists, last year chose to grow other crops instead of onions. This is precisely what led to the general decrease in the areas occupied by onions and the volumes of their collection and export.

It is assumed that this year in the Sughd region, onion production will again be increased and will reach at least 2018 volumes.
