Greenhouse vegetables in the region continued to fall in price. Weekly review of the 14th week of 2020.

Negative price trends strengthened both in the tomato market and in the greenhouse cucumber market

By the beginning of April this year, in all countries of the EastFruit project monitoring region, the new season of greenhouse vegetables was gradually entering the active phase, and the supply of tomatoes and cucumbers from local households continued to grow. This fact gradually reduced the dependence on imported products in many countries of the region. And only in isolated countries, such as, for example, Ukraine, the main supply of greenhouse tomatoes on the market continued to be imports.

In a number of cases, project analysts continued to note interruptions in the supply of new consignments of greenhouse vegetables to the market for two main reasons. First of all, the delivery of imported products was negatively affected by restrictions on border crossings due to restrictions adopted by most countries to prevent the spread of COVID-19. And the second significant factor was the frosts that were recorded in a number of western countries of the region throughout the past week, which had a negative impact on the ripening of vegetables on farms, and, accordingly, on the sample size.

Tomato prices as of Apr 03, 2020

As of early April of this year, the main supply of round red greenhouse tomato in the Ukrainian market continued to be imported products from Turkey. At the same time, according to project experts, in view of the current restrictions on border crossing by the Turkish authorities, it became very difficult for local importers to import new consignments of tomatoes into Ukraine. This circumstance was the main reason for the insignificant increase in prices for tomatoes on the Ukrainian market, and by the end of the reporting period they reached $ 1.44 / kg there, that is, the highest rates for this segment in the entire region.

In the rest of the analyzed countries, the supply of red round greenhouse tomatoes exceeded the available demand, which led to the strengthening of negative price trends. The cheapest greenhouse tomatoes remained in the eastern countries of the analyzed region and in Moldova, where average prices for products did not reach $ 1 / kg.

Cucumber prices as of Apr 03, 2020

In the market for long smooth greenhouse cucumbers, by the end of the reporting period, in the majority of the analyzed countries, as in the case of tomatoes, clear negative price trends were established, due to the gradual increase in the volume of new batches of products delivered to the market from local farms. But in this segment, there were some exceptional moments. Due to border crossings for automobile communication, cheap products from Iran and Afghanistan ceased to enter the Tajik market. The volumes of the last consignments of greenhouse cucumbers from local farms were insignificant and could not cover the existing demand. As a result, by the end of the outgoing week, average prices for long smooth cucumbers in Tajikistan rose to $ 1.27 / kg, and became the highest in the region.

Gherkin prices as of Apr 03, 2020

And only in the segment of short tuberous cucumber, EastFruit project analysts did not record a single exception throughout the reporting period. These products continued to become cheaper in most countries of the region, the price has not changed only in Uzbekistan, where until now it has remained many times lower than in other analyzed countries: on average it was $ 0.37 / kg.

At the same time, project specialists noted that over the past week, the price situation in the market for short cucumber was not stable in all countries of the region. So, in Ukraine, by the middle of this week, night frosts began to be recorded, which entailed a delay in the ripening of cucumbers, and subsequently a decrease in sample sizes. The sellers, immediately responding to the situation, began to increase selling prices, and since the demand for greenhouse cucumbers remained stably high, they did not experience problems with the realization of the available volumes of products. But by the end of the reporting period, the weather in Ukraine had stabilized, the samples of cucumbers in greenhouses increased, which led to the return of prices to their previous positions. In some cases, they fell even below the previous week.
