When forecasting the further situation in the fruit and vegetable market, macroeconomic indicators should be taken into account – Andrey Yarmak

In the situation of the global pandemic associated with the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, agribusiness is in better condition than other sectors of the economy. This is due primarily to the fact that people even in quarantine need something to eat, and therefore, sales of agricultural products will not stop completely. Such an opinion was expressed by the economist of the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Andrei Yarmak during the online webinar “How are agribusiness rules changing due to the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine”, which is being held today by the Agromedia agency Sapienza.media.

“Regardless of the circumstances, people need something to eat,” said Andrei Yarmak.

At the same time, Andrei Yarmak called a characteristic trend in world trade during the coronavirus pandemic a decrease in sales of products with a short term of consumption, and an increase with a longer one. This is told by UkraineFood.org.

This is because, for example, in Italy today, people can very rarely go out of their homes to the store. Therefore, they are trying to purchase as many products with a long shelf life.

“Another point that so far almost no one has felt is to reduce the income of the population. The whole world will subsequently feel it. And this, of course, will affect the sales of products,” said Andrei Yarmak.

Speaking about the prospects of Ukrainian products in foreign markets, an economist at the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) noted that they are the most positive in the grain food group. “After all, this is the product that is in greatest demand all over the world,” said Andrei Yarmak.

At the same time, speaking about forecasts regarding the future prospects of the fruit and vegetable market, Andrei Yarmak noted that all of them are conditional today. “First of all, here we should take into account further macroeconomic indicators of the USA and the countries of the eurozone, and these factors can change quite quickly,” concluded Andrei Yarmak.
